Tavira in the south-east corner of Portugal, is one of the most historic and
prettiest towns along the entire Algarve coast, sporting white-washed
houses topped with decorative chimneys and pyramid shaped Roman-tiled roofs,
set amongst orange, fig and almond trees. This charming town, at the mouth of the Gilao
River, dates back to around 2,000 BC, and boasts a Moorish Castle with some
splendid views from the ramparts. There are also some wonderful churches - 37 of them to be
exact, including the Church of the Misericordia with a magnificent Renaissance door and
an ornate carved high altar. Not many of the buildings pre-date
the devastating earthquake of 1755, which destroyed much of the Algarve, but
the town was painstakingly rebuilt with many fine 18th-century buildings. Tavira flanks both banks of the river
Gilao, which are linked by an
old Roman bridge.
Just offshore on an island opposite the town (reached by regular
short ferry trips) are some beautiful pristine and uncrowded sandy beaches.
Another option is to hire a car and explore Spain to the East (Tavira is close to the border)
and the rest of the Algarve resorts to the west of the town.
Activities - Hunt for seashells, bask on the beach on Tavira Island, enjoy
a variety of watersports, explore the picturesqe town centre, play
golf at one of the four courses nearby or simply relax by one of the pools in the
complex. Night Life - Cafe bars and restaurants abound in the town, but
options for dancing are limited to the throbbing Ubi Discotheque, which is
more than enough for energetic ravers. The town centre is served by
a regular bus service or taxis from the complex. The lively Terrace Bar in the complex
itself with its pool, darts and music will of course also
entertain you!
